Rashida Tlaib has dedicated her life to amplifying and addressing the concerns of working families and everyday folks in Detroit and Wayne County, across Michigan, and around the country. She made history as the first Muslim woman ever elected to the Michigan Legislature, the second Muslim woman to serve in any state legislature, and one of the first two Muslim women in the U.S. Congress.

Rashida was born and raised in Southwest Detroit, the proud daughter of Palestinian immigrant parents and the oldest of 14 siblings. Rashida was the first in her family to attend college and put herself through law school while working at nonprofits and social justice organizations.

In 2018, Rashida was elected to represent Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Rashida raised nearly $100,000 for local community based organizations providing food and other essential items to her residents. Rashida is beloved by 13th district residents for her exceptional and transformative policy proposals. She helped create a $1.5 billion Water is a Human Right fund to stop water shutoffs in Wayne County during COVID-19. Her first bill passed in Congress was the Payee Fraud Prevention Act, putting an end to fraudulent scams targeting vulnerable retirees and their pensions. Rashida also passed legislation prohibiting medically-necessary debt from showing up on credit reports, as well as reducing the number of years negative hits stay on a credit report from 7 to 4 years.

Rashida is well known for her fearless approach as a congresswoman and community leader. She was one of the first Members of Congress to take on President Trump and demand accountability for his lawless and unconstitutional actions. Rashida has taken on corporate polluters such as the Koch brothers and forced them to remove pollutants from Detroit’s riverfront. She also rescued a city park that was illegally-seized by the Ambassador Bridge, a privately-held international bridge owned by billionaire Matty Moroun.

Rashida will work tirelessly to improve the quality of life for our communities through policy and action. Her commitment to staying rooted in the community is what sets Rashida apart as a public servant who puts people first.
