FAQ From Our Road Tour

FAQ From Our Road Tour

Over the last few months, we’ve traveled around our region, bringing Vote Like a Girl’s ‘merch with a mission’ to festivals, main street fairs, conferences, conventions and places large and small where women gather and are inspired to be the change they want to see.

Your enthusiasm for our project of passion has been our fuel and your ideas, insights, and feedback have helped us to hone our message and better serve our mission.

In appreciation for the collective experiment that Vote Like a Girl has become, we thought we would take a few minutes to compile a list of answers to FAQ from our road tour...

Q: How’d you come up with this idea?

It all started with a button at a voter registration drive that said… Vote Like a Girl. Turns out a sassy phrase with a touch of attitude makes people smile. We were thinking this country’s current national political conversation could use a few smiles AND a lot more civility, a healthy dose of girl power and two more moms making sh*t happen! So, we came up with an idea to use our sass for GOOD.

Q: How did you determine what organizations to support?

One of our primary missions was to bridge the political divide and encourage a real dialogue on issues that matter to all of us. No tribal talking points, just real solutions.

So, we’ve focused our support on grass-roots organizations, working through research, data, evidence and life experience to lobby lawmakers on policy that will make people’s lives better.

While issues like a woman’s right to choose, or sensible gun violence prevention legislation, universal healthcare and even how we fund our schools have become highly contentious on social media, endless national surveys tell us that there is far more consensus on these issues than disagreement.

We wanted to support consensus and progress.

While our original list was compiled by a small advisory group of friends from across the political spectrum, it has grown to include recommendations from many of you!

Thank you for your input, and keep them coming - there are so many great organizations out there, and we want to help as many of them as we can!

If you would like to know more about our selection process we have outlined our philanthropy principles on our site.

Q: Which of your organizations have received the greatest support so far?

There are a lot of fired-up moms, women, and girls out there, and for the most part, they are simply looking for representatives to do what’s right (not what’s liberal or conservative, just what makes things better).

Currently, it looks like our VOTING GIRLS are putting their donation dollars behind groups working to get lawmakers to: protect a woman’s right to choose, stop gun violence in our country, take an honest look at racial injustice and finally address the REAL issue of climate change. Our highest donation getters in each of our issue categories are:

Feminist - Planned Parenthood

Change Maker - Everytown for Gun Safety/Moms Demand Action/Students Demand Action

Lady Liberty - Black Lives Matter

Environmentalist - Environmental Defense Fund

Q: Who needs my donation the most?

All of them. If you’ve already made a donation through a purchase with us, please don’t stop there. You can make a donation directly to any of the organizations we support online. They all have an easy to use ‘Make a Donation’  link on their sites.

Also, if you are not already active and engaged and want to be, please consider volunteering to help further the cause. Many of the organizations we support have great local engagement and would love your help.

Q: Is Vote Like a Girl nonpartisan?

We consider Vote Like a Girl to be multi-partisan, but we have taken a position on certain issues that we feel are important to not only women’s ability to thrive in our society but everyone’s.

Unfortunately, in today’s heated political environment, many equate a certain stance on a particular issue to be disqualifying -  from a particular party, from patriotism, and yes, even from morality.

Yep, it is a bit rough out there, but we’re trying to show even those that don’t agree with us that we can disagree and still be good citizens and people - we might even just be two moms who love this country and want to make things better, for all of us.

Q: Does my tee have to match the charity I contribute too?

We get this one all the time. Big apologies for the confusion. You can totally be an Environmentalist and give to a Lady Liberty organization. In a nutshell, buy whatever design moves you and give to any organization you want to support. Don’t know what we mean by all that? You’ll have to visit our site and familiarize yourself with our tee designs and our issue categories. :)

Q: Is this t-shirt true to size?

This is our number one, most asked question on the road and the answer is YES!

We tried on a zillion tees and this was the winner! It had to be LOVED by both mom and teenage daughter, as well as flatter every body type in our small but opinionated focus group.  Our tees are made socially and environmentally responsibly and are the perfect crew, short sleeve tee. They have a new modern, relaxed fit for effortless style and comfort ...and always fit true to size.

What we hear most from women along our trail is ‘thank you and keep going.’

So many women have told us they are grateful for what we’re doing and to keep going. We love hearing that and we will, but the truth is… all the thanks should go to YOU!

Through our travels, we’ve met women who have turned their living rooms into canvassing headquarters; women who have helped students organize and even lobby Congress. We’ve met women who have put endless hours on the canvass trail, who have organized movements in their communities, and women who have found the courage to run for office themselves and WON. To all of them, and to so many of you we say...Thank YOU and keep going!

If you know of an event we should attend or support, please let us know at ivotelikeagirl.com.
